Mary Comerio

mary comerio Professor Comerio is Chairman of the Department of Architecture at the University of California at Berkeley.  She is an architect and researcher and a Faculty Associate at the Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics, Haas School of Business; and of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center at UC Berkeley. Author of Disaster Hits Home: New Policy for Urban Housing Recovery. Other publications in the field of housing, community design, and disaster recovery. Honors include a 1997 Award for Excellence in Research by the Western States Seismic Policy Council and an Award for Outstanding Leadership and Volunteer Service by the Center for Independent Living in 1992. Teaches in the areas of professional practice, project development, seismic and architectural design. Current research activity includes a study of the economic consequence of disaster losses on research universities, and a study of disaster insurance claims in residential structures. In May 2000, Comerio published "The Economic Benefits of a Disaster Resistant University: Earthquake Loss Estimation for UC Berkeley".
