Sandy Hirshen


Sandy's professional career spans thirty years as founding principal of the firm Hirshen Trumbo & Associates in Berkeley. Work of the firm includes public housing, child development and education facilities, parks and playgrounds, health facilities, product design, architectural research and international projects around the world. He has received recognition and numerous awards for social housing and housing for the elderly. Sandy has recently returned to practice with Henriquez Partners Architects, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

He has served on the council of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia and is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and Royal Architecture Institute of Canada.

Sandy served as Director of the School of Architecture at the University of British Columbia. He has also served as the Chair of the Department of Architecture and Director of the Center for Planning Development and Research (CPDR) at the University of California, Berkeley.

Sandy has dedicated his life to teaching and designing with a social conscience and has enriched the lives of his students and colleagues.
